Rolls-Royce is one of the world’s largest suppliers of marine
equipment and systems for naval and commercial vessels,
and the Middle East is an important market.
The region is a crossroad for international shipping, and has
one of the world’s main maritime clusters of shipbuilding yards,
repair yards and associated suppliers. As a result, Rolls-Royce is
well established, supplying a range of equipment and systems
for ships under construction and providing through-life
support for installed Rolls-Royce products.
A sales and service office, opened in Dubai in 2003, is the
centre for Rolls-Royce marine operations in the Middle East.
Skilled service engineers undertake the commissioning of
new equipment and systems on vessels under construction
and carry out routine service and overhaul work on vessels
operating in the region or in transit. The current staffing level
is expanding and satellite sales and service offices are being
established in other countries in the region to fulfill the
Rolls-Royce commitment to provide marine services wherever
customers require it.
Naval
In the naval sector, the principal products are gas turbine
and diesel power units, controllable pitch propellers and
waterjets for propulsion, thrusters, steering gear and
stabilisers, together with the associated control systems.
Many Rolls-Royce systems on order or in service. Typical is
the six-ship Baynunah class corvette programme for the UAE
Navy and the Um Almaradim class patrol boats of the Kuwait
Navy, where both classes have selected Kamewa waterjets.
For the commercial sector, Rolls-Royce provides designs for
specialised vessels, particularly for the offshore oil and gas
industry, as well as a wide range of equipment. For large
merchant ships such as tankers, bulk carriers, LNG carriers
and container ships; deck machinery, CP propellers, thrusters,
rudders and steering gear are the major products requiring
service in the Middle East.
Offshore
Offshore activities continue to grow. A groundbreaking order
in 2006 saw Rolls-Royce design and equipment packages for
two UT 780 anchorhandling/tug/supply vessels and three UT
733 topside maintenance vessels for ESNAAD, a subsidiary of
the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.
As ports in the region are expanding, so is the demand for
powerful tugs using azimuth thrusters. Rolls-Royce supplies
and supports a wide range of these products.
Waterjets are a favoured propulsion system for commercial as
well as naval vessels, and two fast passenger ferries for Oman
will use large Rolls-Royce waterjets.
Although the company is mainly concerned with equipping
and supporting the region's shipping, within the product
portfolio is Syncrolift® shiplift and transfer systems that
enable the rapid servicing of vessels on shore. A good
example is the 2,000 tonne shiplift system installed at Abu
Dhabi Ship Building.
