Rolls-Royce controllable pitch propellers

The Kamewa Type-A Controllable Pitch Propeller

Reliable, cost effective, and hydrodynamically efficient the Type-A CPP builds on the success of the well-proven XF-5 CPP design. Available in a range of sizes, covering powers from 0.5-75MW, the Type-A CPP is suitable for both naval and commercial applications, and has been designed to meet current, and anticipated future CPP market requirements.

The new Rolls-Royce Kamewa type-A hub is available in over 40 hub sizes for 4 or 5 blades.

Key features of the type-A CPP

  • 20% improvement in power-to-weight ratio
  • Robust design for increased service-life
  • Available in NiAl bronze or stainless steel
  • Open water, nozzle and ice-class options
  • 4 or 5 bladed options
  • Increased bearing surfaces for improved strength and wear resistance
  • Optional features include, underwater replacement of blades and a fully feathered design

Offered in two options depending on the speed of the vessel, the standard CP-A hub covers speeds up to 30knots, with the CP-A/H hub designed for faster vessels. Service-life has been extended through significant design improvements. Using computational fluid dynamics and advanced tooling techniques, the hub shape has been specifically developed to reduce drag, giving further benefits in propulsive performance.

Improved power pack for the Type-A CPP

The introduction of a new power pack incorporating load sensing hydraulic pumps, substantially reduces the amount of power required to operate the system, and the amount of oil in circulation. Offered are three types of oil distribution (OD) box, providing increased pitch setting accuracy and simplified service. In the first system the OD box is situated on the propeller shaft. In the second system, the OD is mounted at the forward end of the gearbox, and in the third option, the oil distribution system is integrated into the gearbox housing.

Type-A CPP Control system
Based on the Rolls-Royce common control platform, the new control system for the CP-A comprises a bus connection between the pitch setting system and the bridge levers and displays. Enhanced touch screens at the bridge station provide the operator with a clear and unobstructed view of the system status. The propeller controls are based on latest Rolls-Royce human/machine interface developments, with the system being easily integrated with other Rolls-Royce propulsion equipment, DP systems, and proprietary equipment.
