Thrusters with contra-rotating propellers offer higher
efficiencies of between 10-15 per cent because the aft
propeller regains some of the energy losses in the stream
as well as rotational losses.
Contra-rotating propeller thrusters also have low noise
and vibration, and for the same power have propeller
diameters 20 per cent smaller than single screw units,
giving a shallower draught.
