The combined azimuth/side thruster
is a retractable design that can pivot up into the hull
when not in use. In the retracted position the thrusters
can be operated as a side force thrusters. This design
is ideal for manoeuvring and propulsion, and as an additional
propeller in Dynamic Positioning Systems (DPS).

Rolls-Royce combi-thruster is stored in the ship's hull
by rotating the complete unit 90° around the horizontal
axis to operate as a side force thruster.
Features and benefits
- Speed of response similar to conventional thrusters
- Available in CP or FP propeller options
- Steering unit rotates through 180 degrees in approximately
10 seconds
- 360 degree rotatable as azimuth
- Electric or diesel drive
- Containerised option for simple installation and
removal
- Operates as a side thrusters when retracted
The combi-thrusters version is comprised an equivalent
standard 'swing up' unit installed in a specially designed
hull module. When in the swing up or retracted position
the steering gear may be rotated so that the propeller
unit is used as a transverse thruster.
