Anti-heeling systems

Rolls-Royce has more than 25 years experience in anti-heeling systems. The operational principle of the anti-heeling system is different from conventional pump-activated systems. Rotary piston blower(s) and air vales are connected to side tanks by air pipes.

Water moved by blower air to immediately compensate ship’s heel

As soon as the ship heels due to an asymmetric load, the blower air is led into the corresponding side tanks thereby shifting the tank water athwartships to immediately upright the vessel. No time delay between the shifting phases because the lower is constantly running and the direction of air flow is controlled by rapidly acting air valves.

Features and benefits

  • Immediate reaction
  • Unlimited start/stop frequency
  • High transfer rates
  • No current peaks for motor starts during operation
  • No moving parts in contact with water
  • System’s reliability is proven

The system has no working parts in contact with water, so corrosion will not affect operation or lifetime of the system. The air cushion in the side tanks and pipes enables quick starting and stopping of shifting operations without risk of dynamic shocks which may occur in pump activated systems.

The anti-heeling system is equipped with a fully automatic control including additional remote control station(s). Installation of main components is independent of the location of tanks in the vessel. Several tanks can be connected to one lower/valve system in order to increase the total heeling moment.

This system is available as stand-alone or combined with the functionality of continuous cyclical heeling in level ice (ice-heeling system).
