Fishing winches

Fishing winches

Rugged and reliable

We have supplied the fishing industry since 1942 and the reference list now exceeds 1,000 vessels. Tailor made systems are designed and produced for a broad range of applications.

Rugged design and construction, coupled with high performance characterise Rolls-Royce fishing winches that can have pull capacities of less than six tonnes to any capacity specified by the customer. All are designed to work reliably at maximum load to maintain maximum system sensitivity.

Our objective is to deliver cost-effective fishing solutions that boost catches as well as reducing trawling time and maintenance costs. Winch drive can be AC-electric, low-pressure hydraulic or high-pressure hydraulic depending on the requirement.

Our fishing winch range includes:

  • Trawl purse winches (6-120 t)

  • Auxiliary winches (0.7-50t)

  • Net drum winches (6-120t)

  • The Syncro-Autotrawl system

All winch systems are delivered with remote controls, ensuring that the operator is free to work directly with the load.

Typical applications

  • Bottom trawlers with owners choice of rigging

  • Pelagic trawl

  • Purse Seiner

  • Danish Seiner

  • Longliners

  • Scientific research

Arctic shrimp trawler Remøy Viking
The Rolls-Royce NVC design 61m vessel features a triple-trawl system incorporating four winches (which leaves one in reserve) with direct hydraulic drive. The ability to stream three trawls has a significant impact on fishing efficiency.

Low-pressure hydraulics delivers a compact winch with a first layer pull of 45 tonnes, a shooting speed of 560m/min and a drum capacity in excess of 3,200m of 32mm wire. All fishing gear is controlled by the syncro auto trawl system, which enables individual or synchronous control of the four trawl wires.

In trawling mode the system aims to maintain the programmed tow length, sensing the load from the drive system according to length deviation. If the length difference is larger than the set limit, the winch pulls in the wire that is furthest out. Alarms for tow length and length difference/deviation are both visual and audible.

The vessel also has a number of other specialist winches fitted - eight 17-tonne sweep line winches and pairs of 18-tonne Gilson, 12 tonne cod-end and 12 tonne outhaul winches, as well as a 6-tonne capstan.

Pelagic trawlers Challenge and Kvalskjaer
All are equipped with Rolls-Royce hydraulic deck machinery operating at 65bar. The operating pressure ensures the direct drive winches are powerful, compact, lightweight and sensitive. Installation is greatly simplified because the pipes are smaller and can be assembled without welding.

160 American Dynasty

American Dynasty - electric winch upgrade
Electric winches were selected for this upgrade to the 20-year old vessel by owner American Seafoods Company of Seattle, due to their energy efficiency during fishing/trawling operations and regenerative ability during shooting.

Hydraulic winches consume more power as the hydraulic pumps are on continuously during trawl mode.
Two trawl winches, a net sounder cable winch, Rolls-Royce frequency converters and a Syncro RT automatic trawl winch control system were installed to programme during a five-week refit.
