Rolls-Royce wins $42M Chinese ship contract

Rolls-Royce has signed its largest contract with Chinese shipbuilder Sinopacific, to provide steering gear and deck machinery worth $42 million.

Bjorn Johnsen, Rolls-Royce Vice President Sales and Marketing (Greater China) - Marine said: “This order takes us to a record in China this year, with contracts for more than 700 ship sets of steering gear and to 300 ship sets of deck machinery. The Chinese market is now the biggest global market for Rolls-Royce for commercial merchant ships.”

John Jin, Sinopacific Director and Vice-President, said: “This extensive contract is a result of Sinopacific’s wish to work with fewer and stronger companies able to offer quick and reliable service. Rolls-Royce is a world leader in design, development, supply and service.”

The contract covers 34,000-118,000dwt bulk carriers and 16,500 cubic metre capacity liquid petroleum gas vessels. The first equipment will be delivered in the first half of 2009.

Sinopacific ship building group comprises five shipyards and two design companies.

The Rolls-Royce marine facility in Shanghai is the company’s largest investment in China to date. Equipment produced or assembled there includes tunnel thrusters, rudders, control and steering systems and deck machinery.
The Marine business of Rolls-Royce employs 7,000 people in 34 countries with the main manufacturing centres being in the UK, the Nordic countries, the United States and increasingly Asia.
Rolls-Royce is a world leader in marine solutions, providing products, service and expertise to more than 20,000 commercial and naval vessels in the offshore, merchant, naval and submarines markets. It designs ships and its product range includes propulsion systems featuring diesel engines and gas turbines, propellers, thrusters and water jets. In addition it provides manoeuvring and stabilising systems and deck machinery. About 40 per cent of marine turnover comes from aftermarket service support, with a global customer support network of sales and service centres in 33 countries.
