Design and development have been carried out as a joint project between Rolls-Royce and Hyundai Heavy Industries, and six-cylinder technology demonstrator engines have been operating very successfully on test beds in Bergen, Norway, and Ulsan, Korea.
This engine has a bore of 250mm, a long (330mm) stroke, and a rating of 300kW when running at 900-1000rpm. More than 40 years of experience with 250mm bore diesel and gas engines amassed by the Rolls-Royce reciprocating engine business has gone into the design and production development of the C25:33. Diesel engines with 5, 6, 8 and 9 cylinders in line and 12, 16 and 18 cylinders in V-formation will be manufactured, spanning the power range from 1,200kW to 5,400kW for both marine use and land power generation applications. For the latter, a spark ignition, gas fuelled, version will also be developed.
Orders have been received for four marine engines. They will power a UT737 offshore support vessel under construction for Island Offshore at Soeviknes Verft. Four, nine-cylinder type C25:33L9A engines will generate electricity for the diesel electric propulsion system. The same owner has an option for a further four engines for a similar vessel.
