Rolls-Royce adopts a policy of directing the majority
of its academic research into selected University Technology
Centres (UTCs) by establishing long-term strategic partnerships
with high calibre university departments with leading
expertise in selected fields.

Reducing ships fuel consumption by predicting how to
smooth the flow of water around the stern and into the
propeller is a particular challenge.
Close contact with the best academic institutions gives
Rolls-Royce access to a wealth of talent and creativity.
The objective is to stimulate research and maintain
a strong focus on its application to create a technological
lead.
Rolls-Royce and the University agree to ensure the
UTCs have adequate funding, staffing and infrastructure
so that they can operate as an effective and integrated
part of the Rolls-Royce Research and Technology Acquisition
programme.
Rolls-Royce UTCs now total 25 worldwide. The Norwegian
University of Science and technology in partnership
with Marintek is the centre of excellence for vessel
performance, and for computational hydrodynamics the
centre is Chalmers Technical University, Gothenberg,
Sweden.
