Kuala Lumpur, July 7: Rolls Wood OTEC Sdn Bhd (RWO) today officially opened an overhaul facility in Shah Alam to repair and overhaul Rolls-Royce aero derivative gas turbine equipment for the oil and gas industry.
The Rolls Wood OTEC overhaul facility was officially opened by the Minister of International Trade and Industry, YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa bin Mohamad. This marks the completion of a three-phase programme which began in 2008, to gradually build up the capabilities of the facility to service, repair and overhaul RB211 gas turbine engines locally. Currently, the Rolls Wood OTEC overhaul facility has the capability to handle 12-15 gas turbines a year.
Managing Director of OTEC Kemajuan, Abdul Azis Mohamad said: “As the fleet of Rolls-Royce gas turbines increases in the Malaysian market, RWO will grow in tandem with the future requirements of PETRONAS and its partners in the oil and gas industry. With the capability offered by RWO, our customers will be able to save on time and costs by repairing and overhauling the gas turbine equipment locally.”
“The Malaysian repair and overhaul team at RWO have all undergone extensive training programmes in the UK and Malaysia and are able to deliver high quality and cost-effective gas turbine services to its customers,” added Derek Gartshore, General Manager for RWO.
Currently, the Rolls Wood OTEC overhaul facility has 15 Malaysian technical staff qualified to handle the repair and overhaul work for Rolls-Royce gas turbines locally.
Andrew Heath, President of the Rolls-Royce Energy business and a director of Rolls Wood Group (Repair & Overhauls) Ltd said: “We are committed to working with our Malaysian partners to provide the highest standards of service and support to our customers in the oil and gas industry, one of the key economic sectors identified in the tenth Malaysia Plan. The opening of this overhaul facility will enable us to leverage the combined expertise of Rolls-Royce, Rolls Wood Group and OTEC Kemajuan to meet the demands of a growing aftermarket.”
Over 600 industrial RB211 engines have been sold worldwide to over 100 customers in 37 countries and they have achieved more than 26 million hours of operation. Malaysia is a major operator of RB211s and to date, there are 35 RB211 engines installed in the country.
