Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is the leading civil aerospace customer of Rolls-Royce in Malaysia. MAS’s relationship with Rolls-Royce dates back to 1947 when Armstrong Siddeley, which later became part of Rolls-Royce, powered the inaugural Malayan Airways Limited (MAL) flight. MAL is the predecessor to MAS.

In 1982 MAS was the launch customer for the RB211-524D4 engine, which powered the airline’s fleet of Boeing 747s. In 1994 the Trent 800 was selected to power a fleet of 17 Boeing 777s, with the engine achieving various milestones, such as a world record flight time, and the first commercial flight over the North Pole. MAS’ Trent 800-powered B777 fleet has been in operation with over 200,000 flights registering over 1 million engine hours.

In late 2004, MAS chose the Trent 900 to power its fleet of six Airbus A380s and has since confirmed it will take delivery of the aircraft in 2011.

AirAsia X, the low-cost long haul subsidiary of AirAsia, selected Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines to power its fleet of 15 Airbus A330-300s, with the first aircraft commencing operations in late 2008. They also chose the Trent XWB for its fleet of ten Airbus A350s.

In 2010 Rolls-Royce also signed a long term TotalCare® service agreement to support engines that power Malaysia Airlines’ fleet of 17 Boeing 777 aircraft.

The agreement, which covers Trent 800 engines, is the first time that Malaysia Airlines operations will be supported by TotalCare® support.

The Prime Minister operates the Bombardier Global Express powered by the BR710 engine. Further examples of this aircraft and other corporate aircraft types in Malaysia include the Gulfstream IV, powered by the Rolls-Royce Tay. In addition, there are almost 40 Model 250-powered civilian-registered helicopters fulfilling a variety of roles in the country.
