Heritage

1904

Historic first meeting between The Hon. Charles Rolls and Henry Royce at the Midland Hotel in Manchester, UK, which led to an agreement and the formation of the world famous company. Some 40 years later, the company began operations in Malaysia, while establishing a strong and successful partnership with the country’s national airline.

1947

Malaysia Airlines’ (MAS) predecessor, Malayan Airways Limited, commences operations with a five-seat Airspeed Consul powered by two Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah X engines. Armstrong Siddeley later becomes part of Rolls-Royce.

1960s

MAS grows from a single aircraft operator into a company employing 2,400 staff, with Rolls-Royce engines powering the De Havilland Comet and Fokker F27 aircraft.

1982

MAS is the launch customer of the RB211-524D4 engine for the Boeing 747. Rolls-Royce sets up a field support office in Malaysia to support these aircraft.

1997

The world's largest ship-lift system is commissioned and installed by Syncrolift of Rolls-Royce for MMHE Sdn. Bhd. in Johor 1997 The first MAS Rolls-Royce Trent 800-powered Boeing 777 sets world records.

2003

The Royal Malaysian Navy becomes the first defence force to take delivery of the Super Lynx 300 helicopter, powered by the Rolls-Royce and Honeywell LHTEC T800 engine.

2004

Rolls-Royce opens its regional marine office in Kuala Lumpur. MAS selects the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 to power its new fleet of Airbus A380s.

2005

The Malaysian government announces the purchase of four Airbus A400M military aircraft.

2007

AirAsia X selects Rolls-Royce’s Trent 700 to power its new fleet of Airbus A330-300s, and launches its A330 long-haul start-up operations. Rolls-Royce signs an alliance with energy giants PETRONAS and OTEC Kemajuan.

2008

Rolls-Royce extends relationship with the Royal Malaysian Air Force, providing spares and support for their fleet of Rolls-Royce Adour, Viper and Spey engines.

2009

Rolls-Royce was selected to power AirAsia X aircraft in an order worth up to US$1.8bn at list prices. Trent XWB engines have been selected for 10 firm and five option Airbus A350 XWB aircraft ordered by AirAsia X.

Rolls-Royce signs a long term TotalCare® service agreement to support engines that power Malaysia Airlines’ fleet of 17 Boeing 777 aircraft. The agreement, which covers Trent 800 engines, is the first time that Malaysia Airlines operations will be supported by TotalCare® support.
