Historic first meeting between the Hon Charles Rolls
and Henry Royce at the Midland Hotel in Manchester, UK,
which led to an agreement and the formation of the world
famous company. Some 40 years later, the company began operations
in Malaysia, while establishing a strong and successful
partnership with the country’s national airline.
April 1947
Malayan Airways Limited (MAL) began air service operations
with a five seat Airspeed Consul powered by two Armstrong
Siddeley Cheetah X engines. Armstrong Siddeley later merged
to become part of Rolls-Royce, in the same way that MAL
was the forerunner to Malaysia Airlines.
1960s
Malaysia Airlines grew from a single aircraft operator
into a company employing 2,400 staff, with Rolls-Royce engines
powering the De Havilland Comet and Fokker F27 aircraft.
1980s
Malaysia Airlines operated two Boeing 747-200 aircraft powered
by Rolls-Royce RB211 engines and it was during this period
that Rolls-Royce set up a field support office in Malaysia.
1997
First Malaysia Airlines' Rolls-Royce Trent 892 powered Boeing
777 sets world records.
