Rolls-Royce powers over 300 aircraft in
Korea, with over 500 engines in service
with Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Government
agencies and all three of Korea's armed
forces.
Rolls-Royce AG9140RF gas turbines are
currently being built under license by
Samsung Techwin for the Korean Navy's
KDX-III Aegis destroyer. In 2006, Rolls-Royce
delivered three gas turbine generator
sets to the first Republic of Korea Navy
KDX III destroyer. Rolls-Royce waterjets,
propellers, gear boxes, machinery control
systems and ship lifts are also in or
coming into service with the Korean Navy,
maritime police and coastguard agencies.
Rolls-Royce Group's office is in Seoul.
The marine equipment facility at Busan,
owned by Rolls-Royce, has more than 90
employees, and supplies both Korean and
Japanese shipbuilding companies.
Rolls-Royce also supplies gas turbines
to Korean-built oil and gas exploration
and production facilities for offshore
owners and Korean petrochemical plants.
Rolls-Royce is seeking to make Korea its
long term partner for both the Korean
and worldwide markets. Co-production in
Korea in partnership with Korean industry
is Rolls-Royce's preferred mechanism for
its business operations in Korea.
Samsung Techwin is the sole supplier of
combustor modules for Rolls-Royce Trent
900 engines for the Airbus A380 under
a long-term agreement signed in 2001.
It was won against strong competition
from Japan and it is the first time that
this core technology has been transferred
outside Rolls-Royce.
Rolls-Royce signed a joint technology
research and development collaboration
agreement with Pusan National University
(PNU) in 2006. The agreement marks the
start of joint research activities between
Rolls-Royce and PNU, to develop ultra-efficient,
ultra-light weight heat exchangers. Also,
Rolls-Royce has signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) with DongHwa Entec
Co. Ltd. which is small-medium company,
located in Busan for their joint research
and manufacturing programmes.
