Rolls-Royce can trace its roots in the marine industry back as far as 1849 - a time span which includes the development of many ground breaking technologies, from the development of the controllable pitch propeller, tunnel thruster and nuclear propulsion for Royal Navy submarines - to marine aero-derivative gas turbines, waterjets and innovative offshore vessel designs.
Today, with a primary focus on power and propulsion, integrated systems and services, Rolls-Royce's Marine business serves over 2,000 customers and has equipment installed on 30,000 vessels operating around the world.
Our extensive product base and proven experience in both ship design and systems integration, enables Rolls-Royce to bring the right products together to develop the systems that meet the performance requirements.
Customer focus is maintained through our four business units that address specific market segments - Merchant, Naval, Offshore and Submarines. A global support network underpins all activities and ensures contracts can be undertaken, and Rolls-Royce support is at hand anywhere in the world.
A strong focus on research and development has seen Rolls-Royce become the pioneer of many important marine technologies that include; aero derivative marine gas turbines, controllable pitch propellers and waterjets.
Since the days of the Mikasa battleship, built in 1896 in the UK by Vickers (acquired by Rolls-Royce in 1999), Rolls-Royce has had a strong relationship with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
With more than 200 gas turbines in service, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force is today one of the world' s largest operators of Rolls-Royce marine gas turbines, with Spey, Olympus and Tyne engines predominating for propulsion and the AG9140 for on-board power generation. In addition, Kamewa waterjets equip vessels of Japan' s coastal patrol units, while Bird Johnson and Kamewa propellers feature in destroyers and auxiliary vessels.
