Frigate MT30

Operating in both commercial and naval sectors, Rolls-Royce is a global leader in marine propulsion, engineering and hydrodynamic expertise, with the broadest product range in the business and full systems integration capability.

Since the days of the Mikasa battleship, built in 1896 by Vickers, which was acquired by Rolls-Royce in 1999, the Group has had a strong relationship with the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) has produced and supports Rolls-Royce on more than 200 gas turbines for 48 Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force vessels, powering almost every class of vessel.

KHI packages the Tyne/Olympus and Spey marine propulsion systems for the JMSDF, which with 160 gas turbines in service is today one of the world’s largest operators of Rolls-Royce marine gas turbines, with Spey, Olympus and Tyne engines predominating for propulsion and the 501 for on-board power generation.

Kamewa waterjets equip vessels of Japan’s coastal patrol units, while Bird Johnson and Kamewa propellers feature in destroyers and auxiliary vessels.
