Sir John Rose, Chief Executive of
Rolls-Royce "lighting-the-lamp" at the traditional Indian welcome given to his senior delegation at the HAL Management Academy in Bangalore. The ceremony, in the presence of Mr Ashok Baweja, Chairman of HAL, also marked a celebration of the 50-year partnership between Rolls-Royce and HAL.

Coming to India

Rolls-Royce held its Senior Management Conference in Asia for the first time in 2007, when the top 100 executives from around the world met in Bangalore from September 26-28. Previous meetings have been held in Europe and United States.

The objective was to expose the Group's senior team to the extraordinary progress India has made over the last ten years and help them understand some of the factors that underpin this success. While the Indian growth story is well documented, executives saw for themselves innovation in the Indian private sector at INFOSYS, WIPRO, and TATA - which have all achieved global recognition - and the strengths and capabilities at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited - now a world class public sector company. They also saw how entrepreneurial spirit and determination flourish in modern India despite its challenging infrastructure.

Bangalore also provided a unique opportunity for Rolls-Royce to consolidate and extend its 50 year relationship with HAL. Delegates saw HAL's Engine Division and Adour assembly line, the Aircraft Division and the Jaguar Hangar, the Foundry and Forge Division, where rolled rings are manufactured for Rolls-Royce civil engines.

Rolls-Royce has a long history of collaboration with Indian industry. Not only does the partnership with HAL go back over 50 years, but the Rolls-Royce association with the Indian aviation industry dates back to 1932. This was when Tata Aviation Services, the former Tata Airlines which became Air India, took to the skies with an aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce engines carrying mail and passengers between Karachi and Bombay. In 2008, Rolls-Royce and the Indian Air Force will celebrate 75 years of successful partnership.
