The Magic of a Name
The Magic of a Name is Peter Pugh's definitive account
of the history of Rolls-Royce. It contains hitherto
unpublished material and over 150 photographs from the
Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust's private collection.
Part One: The First Forty
Years
Part one tells the story of the historic meeting of
two great men: Henry Royce and the Honourable Charles
Rolls. Charting the building of the Silver Ghost, 'The
best car in the world'; the legendary engines used in
the pioneering days of powered flight; the first direct
flight across the Atlantic; and the development of the
world's first jet engine designed by Frank Whittle and
marks out its future.
Part Two: The Power of the
Jets
Part two of the history tells the story of how Rolls-Royce
came to dominate the design and production of engines
which have powered the world's most advanced and successful
civil and military aircraft and ships.
Part Three: A Family of
Engines
Part 3 of the history completes the Rolls-Royce trilogy.
The book looks at the company's bold decision to develop
the RB211 family of engines in the 1960s and 1970s,
that would eventually lead to the development of the
Trent engines. It also looks at the company's close
co-operation with other companies in producing new aero
engines such as the V2500 and BR700 series. To conclude,
there is an evaluation of the company becoming a 'global'
player and how Rolls-Royce extended its portfolio in
to marine and energy markets.
