
The FanTastic Challenge is a 3 Round knockout competition. The
winning team from each round will go into the next round of the
competition. The winner of Round 3 will win the overall competition.
Round 1: -
In your team you will race your cart over a distance specified by
your teacher. You will be given 3 attempts and the average of those
times is counted as your go. The fastest team will win and go into
Round 2.
Round 2 (50 Points Available): -
This round has 3 parts: -
Event 1 – Drag Race (20 points)
Similar to the drag race in Round 1, but you will race your cart
over 8 meters. You have 3 attempts at the event and the average
of your times is recorded.
Event 2 – Drop Test (20 points in total)
This event will test how well you have made your cart. Your cart
will start at the top of the ramp shown below and released without
the use of the fan. Your cart will be awarded points for traveling
the furthest and also with the least deviation from the centerline.
The event is worth 20 points in total with 10 points for the furthest
distance and 10 points for the least deviation from the centerline.
Event 3 – Poster Presentation (10 points)
You will need to put a poster together on either A3 or A2 paper
describing your cart and present this to 2 of the FanTastic Challenge
team members for around 5 minutes.
You will be awarded points for: -
- Explanation of your design and team organisation
- Why your made any design decisions
- Testing and cart development
- Question answering
Round 3 (80 Points Available): -
Event 1 – Drag Race (20 points)
Similar to the drag race in Round 2.
Event 2 – Drop Test (20 points in total)
This event is the same event that was run in Round 2.
Event 3 – Presentation (30 points in total)
You will need to present a poster about your project on A3 or A2
paper. Your poster will be displayed throughout the Final Round
along with other teams posters. As well as the poster, you will
have to give a presentation of your project to 2 senior Rolls-Royce
Engineers for no more than 15 minutes including questions.
This event is scored out of 30 points in total, 15 points for the
poster and 15 points for the presentation. Judges will be looking
for the following to award points: -

Event 4 – Mystery Challenge (10 points)
This will be a mystery until the day. You will have to put your
engineering knowledge to the test to compete against the other schools
in this mystery challenge.
