Modular platforms and shielding to allow safe access to reactor fuel channels represent another facet of Rolls-Royce nuclear expertise and technology.
Our design of various widths and multiple configurations of work platforms allows access to every part of the reactor face. A shielded canopy, complete with thick steel roof, is installed to aid the radiation protection of personnel.
Fabrication tolerances were critical to provide an obstacle-free safe working surface once all platforms are installed.
Rolls-Royce also fabricates the custom, robust clamp mechanism to hold the platforms securely to their elevating device. These clamps are designed to be operated by workers in radiation suits. The support system is seismically qualified and Rolls-Royce engineering input includes finite element analysis, seismic analysis, accident analysis and a radiation safety review.
