Rolls-Royce wins new Thailand power contract

Rolls-Royce said today that gas compression and power generation units for Thailand’s third gas pipeline master plan, covering a total of 11 onshore and offshore projects, will be delivered in the first quarter of 2009.

Three units, two for gas compression and one for electrical power generation, were ordered last year by Samsung Engineering Company Limited (SECL) for PTT Public Company Limited’s (PTT) Gas Separation Plant 6 project. They are designed to increase the supply of natural gas to the eastern region of the country.

The industrial RB211-G62 DLE gas compression and RB211-GT62 DLE power generation gas turbine packages will join 15 Rolls-Royce machines – Four (4) RB211-G62, seven (7) Avon units and four 501-KC Units at Map Ta Phut, Rayong.

This site, in the eastern seaboard province of Rayong, first started operation in 1984 using a Rolls-Royce Avon gas compression unit. Today, the site hosts four gas separation plants.

Currently, 70 per cent of Thailand’s electricity supply for its 65 million people is met by gas-fired power plants. Three quarters of the gas produced in the country is used for electrical power generation.

Tom Curley, President of the company’s energy business, said: “Rolls-Royce is proud to have been an important supplier to PTT for over two decades. This latest contract further strengthens our position in Thailand and the Asia Pacific region.”

The three new packages will be assembled at Rolls-Royce facilities in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

The two RB211-G62 DLE gas turbine units (rated at 29,675 HP) will be coupled with Ebara gas compressors and will be operational in 2009. The RB211-GT62 DLE power generation set, including a Siemens electrical generator (rated at 25 MW), will also become operational in late 2009.
PTT is Thailand’s only fully integrated gas company and is the majority owner of subsidiary PTTEP, a leading exploration and production company in Thailand. PTTEP who has recently commissioned two RB211-G62 Compression Units into service on the PTTEP Arthit Production Platform, operating in the Gulf of Thailand.
Rolls-Royce has 29 gas turbines operating in Thailand, eleven on offshore platforms in the Gulf of Thailand for PTT Public Company Limited and Chevron Thailand Limited, with the remainder onshore either compressing gas or generating electricity for PTT. An additional 8 gas turbines are either on order or are being installed.
More than 600 Rolls-Royce industrial gas turbines are operating in the Asia Pacific region, providing reliable service to drive the region’s expanding energy industries. Total operating hours of Rolls-Royce industrial gas turbines worldwide is over 160 million.
THAI Airways International recently selected its fourth version of the Rolls-Royce Trent aero engine, with an order for the Trent 900 to power its fleet of six Airbus A380s. Rolls-Royce also powers several aircraft types in the Royal Thai Armed forces and provides equipment for the Thai naval fleet.
