Rolls-Royce wins first Australian order for Industrial Trent

Rolls-Royce plc, a world leading provider of power systems and services for use on land, at sea and in the air, has won a contract from Alinta Limited to provide a Trent 60 WLE dual-fuel electrical generating set at its new Tamar Valley Power Station site on the Tamar River in Tasmania.

The Trent 60 will operate in a simple-cycle plant providing 58MW of electrical power as part of a new 180MW gas turbine installation, which will provide back-up electricity when required, as well as peaking capacity to the National Electricity Market.

Charlie Athanasia, Vice-President of Power Generation for the Rolls-Royce energy business, said: “The Trent 60 gas turbine genset package will allow Alinta to provide a long-term, clean and efficient source of electricity to its local community.”

The Tamar Valley site has the potential for further development having all the features required for modern and efficient gas-fired power generation. It is adjacent to both the Tasmanian gas pipeline and high voltage electricity transmission lines in addition to having access to a supply of cooling water.

Rolls-Royce will manufacture the Trent 60 engine at its Montreal, Canada facility with assembly of the complete electrical generating set package taking place at its Mount Vernon, Ohio factory in the US. Delivery is scheduled for the third quarter in 2008. The first electricity produced at the site will be during the first quarter of 2009.

With this Trent 60 sale, Rolls-Royce has sold its complete range of industrial gas turbines to operators in Australia since the first engines, industrial Avons, went into service in 1968 with the Hydro Commission of Tasmania.

Over 50 Rolls-Royce industrial gas turbines, including Avons, 501s, Olympus and RB211s, have been delivered to operators in Australia to provide power for installations such as hospitals in Melbourne, Dandenong and Alfred, tyre factories, newsprint mills, mining companies and operation offshore on oil and gas platforms.
The Trent 60 is the most powerful and efficient engine in the Rolls-Royce industrial gas turbines product range. Delivering up to 58MW of electric power in simple cycle service at 42 per cent efficiency, the engine has established a new benchmark for fuel economy and cost savings.
Customers in Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Germany, Israel, Qatar, Sharjah, England and the USA have already ordered Trent power packages.
With over 160 million hours of operating experience, over 4,000 Rolls-Royce industrial gas turbine packages have been ordered by customers in nearly 80 countries.
Rolls-Royce has played an important role in the development of Australia’s civil aviation, defence and marine industries for more than 85 years.
Flagship airlines Qantas and Air New Zealand are important customers in the region. Qantas operates Rolls-Royce powered Boeing 747s, 767s, 717s and Rolls-Royce partnership IAE V2500 engines on its A320 Jetstar fleet. Qantas will be one of the first customers in the region to operate the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 powered A380 in 2008.
Rolls-Royce engines have powered RAAF aircraft since the service’s formation in 1921. Today more than half of the installed engines in both the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces are from Rolls-Royce.
