Thermal paint technology - surface temperature measurement. Thermal Paints are temperature sensitive coatings used to identify and measure peak surface temperature values, including surrounding thermal gradients by irreversibly changing colour.
Thermal Paints, also known as Temperature Indicating Paints, provide a simple, effective and inexpensive way to obtain a permanent visual record of the temperature distribution over the surface of components. They can be applied to components with even the most complex surface shapes and do not modify the thermal behaviour of a component during testing.

The paint types are divided into two general groups:

Group 1 - MC Paints, these are low temperature paints using four or less colour changes and cover a temperature range from 120ºC to 590ºC.

Group 2 - TP Paints, these are high temperature multi change paints (minimum five colour changes) and are able to cover a range from 500ºC to over 1300ºC.

All of the current range of Thermal Paints are regularly used in the development of Rolls-Royce gas turbine engine components. These parts often experience high temperatures surrounded by high thermal gradients, which could be in the order of 500ºC over the surface of one single component.

The Service
The acquisition of accurate temperature information using this technology requires much skill and experience from the operator, in order to correctly interpret the sometimes very subtle colour changes of the paint.

Rolls-Royce Deutschland has a dedicated team of experts which have over 40 years experience in this technique. Coupled with the best equipment available, it is ensured that the customer receives the highest quality temperature data available, delivered in the form of a technical report.

This technique is not limited to the turbine engine industry. Thermal Paints can be applied to almost any accessible metallic component. Rolls-Royce Deutschland has successfully provided this technique to external companies since 1995, where accurate surface temperature measurement is required but conventional methods are either unsuitable or fail to provide sufficient data.

Security of sensitive data to all customers is assured. All work undertaken in our aero-engine development facility, south of Berlin, or on sites defined by our customers is carried out under high discretion.
