Tay. The Tay has proven to be a very durable engine in demanding short-haul operations as well as long range point to point services. Covering a thrust range between 13,850 to 15,400 lb (61.5 - 68.4 kN) it powers both civil and military aircraft.

Increasingly, Rolls-Royce Tay, BR710, & Spey powered aircraft are being outfitted for a variety of special mission applications such as electronic intelligence, maritime and border patrol, airways navigation verification, logistics support and photo reconnaissance. For example, in 2001 Saudi Arabia received its first special mission Tay 611-8 powered Gulfstream GIV-SP equipped for medical evacuation. The Gulfstream GIV and GIV-SP are widely used for special mission purposes, with more than 50 aircraft in service with governments world wide.

The Tay 611-8 is renowned for its reliability. An improved version of the engine is under development. The new engine mark designated Tay 611-8C includes the incorporation of an electronic engine control system (FADEC).

This latest Tay edition is aimed at the continuation of the record reliability set over the last 40 years by the preceding Rolls-Royce powered Gulfstream GI (Dart powered), GII, and GIII (Spey powered).

Technical details
The Tay is a two-shaft high-bypass ratio engine. A 44-45 inch diameter wide-chord fan with three stages of LP compressor to the rear, a 12-stage HP compressor; annular combustion system, consisting of ten combustors; a two-stage HP turbine; and three-stage LP turbine. 'The majority of the bypass duct is constructed in carbon fibre composite material. Cold bypass air and hot exhaust are combined in a forced mixer that gives good propulsive efficiency and low noise generation.

- Today's fleet of over 750 Tay-powered aircraft has accumulated over 14   millions flight hours in service

- The average Tay 650 engine basic despatch reliability consistently achieves   or exceeds 99.95 %.
