Rolls-Royce - Powering Germany

Rolls-Royce has built on a tradition of business relations with German companies and government agencies that dates back over ninety years. Over that time, Rolls-Royce has steadily strengthened its links with Germany. Approximately 1.5 billion Euros have been invested in developing the Rolls-Royce locations in Germany and the successful BR700 family of engines. Today Rolls-Royce in Germany has a workforce of around 3,000 divided between its two sites in Dahlewitz near Berlin and Oberursel near Frankfurt am Main. Rolls-Royce Deutschland is Germany's only fully certified engine manufacturer with complete systems capability for the design, production and after-sales support of modern civil and military turbine engines.

Together with German partners, Rolls-Royce supplies, produces and supports engines for customers both in Germany and abroad. These customers not only include big names among the commercial airlines and charter operators, but also the German Armed Forces, many of whose fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters are powered by Rolls-Royce engines. 2,200 Rolls-Royce engines are currently in service in Germany.

Industrial gas turbines built by the company are in service in Germany in the power generation, oil and gas sectors and the latest product, the Trent 60, is on order by RWE, Germany’s largest electricity supplier. Four generating sets will replace 1970’s technology gas turbines at the Emsland combined cycle power station. In addition, in naval engineering, Rolls-Royce is one of the world's leading suppliers of integrated propulsion systems.

The BR700 family of engines was developed at the Dahlewitz plant. Final assembly of all BR700 engines takes place there. The success story of the BR700 engines is reflected in over seven million cumulative operating hours. As the Centre of Competence for two-shaft engines within the Rolls-Royce Group, Dahlewitz is also responsible for the Tay, Spey and Dart engine series. Rolls-Royce Deutschland provides support to 5,000 engines in service worldwide.

In 2005, Rolls-Royce relocated the V2500 – one of its large civil aero engines, previously assembled and tested at its main Derby site in the UK - to Dahlewitz, as part of its strategy to build up competence centres around the world. The V2500, a product of International Aero Engines, a consortium in which Rolls-Royce is senior partner, is a twin-shaft turbofan suitable for short and medium range aircraft and is installed on the Airbus A319, A320 and A321 and the A319 Corporate Jet. Responsibility for the V2500 programme, its technology management, final assembly and test were also transferred to Rolls-Royce Deutschland.

The Oberursel site site has become established as a recognised production location within Rolls-Royce. High-tech components for numerous Rolls-Royce engine programmes are manufactured here, employing state-of-the-art production technology. Furthermore, small gas turbines for civilian and military applications, e.g. the T53, Gnome, Tornado SPS and T56, are maintained and overhauled at this site.

Final assembly of the RTM322 engines, developed jointly by Rolls-Royce and Turbomeca for the Bundeswehr's new NH90 helicopters, is carried out in Oberursel, from where they are also maintained and supported.

Rolls-Royce Deutschland is responsible for delivering technically demanding modules, such as the high-pressure compressor and for systems integration of the TP400-D6 engine programme for the Airbus A400M military transport aircraft.
