Rolls-Royce awarded $32 million Model 250 service contract

The U.S. Army has awarded Rolls-Royce a $32 million contract modification for provision of Contractor Logistics Support (CLS) services covering the Model 250 - powered OH-58 Kiowa Warrior military helicopter fleet. Today, the U.S. Department of Defense has more than 1000 Model 250-powered helicopters in service around the world.

As part of this CLS agreement, which will cover nine Kiowa Warrior units and more than 250 helicopters through 2010, Rolls-Royce will provide engine repair and overhaul as well as parts supply. In addition, field representatives will accompany OH-58 Kiowa Warrior units whenever and wherever they are deployed to provide tactical, hands-on support.

The OH-58 Kiowa Warrior is a member of the OH-58 family of single-engine, single rotor military helicopters produced by Bell Helicopter.

Rolls-Royce is the world-leading producer of light turbine engines in the helicopter market. The Model 250 line has produced 30,000 engines, with approximately 16,000 currently in service worldwide in a wide range of aircraft styles.

Originally developed as a 250 shp turboshaft / turboprop family to meet the needs of the U.S. Army, the Model 250 family has evolved into one of the industry’s most successful civil and military turbine engine product lines, with four generations of powerplants.
The latest Model 250-C47B turboshaft is a FADEC-equipped engine that produces 650 mechanical shaft horsepower (813 thermodynamic shp) at take-off.
The Model 250 family includes a variety of types, including the 420-450 shp Series II turboshaft, the 420-450 shp Series II turboprop, the Model 250-K34 industrial engine, the military Model 250-C30R/3 powerplant for the Bell OH-58D Kiowa Warrior and Boeing MH-6 Mission Enhanced Little Bird (MELB), and the 650-715 shp Series IV turboshaft.
