The Rolls-Royce relationship with Japan spans more than 100 years, going back to when Vickers (now part of Rolls-Royce) built the battleship Mikasa. Currently we provide products and services to civil aerospace, defence aerospace, marine and energy customers in Japan.
Our business relationships in Japan extend beyond supplying products and services, and are built on strong partnerships with leading Japanese companies and research institutions.
Rolls-Royce has offices in Tokyo and Kobe, with a service support office in Haneda International Airport.
Branch offices with specific business responsibilities, such as field service representatives and liaison engineers, are located around Japan close to our customers and partners.
Japanese companies are involved not only in the production of Trent engine components and modules, but also play key roles in the development programmes of Rolls-Royce engines.
Rolls-Royce collaborates with Japan in research and development. In 2006 we began a joint research project with the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) to develop next-generation superalloys for turbine blades on future engines, which will help reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Civil Aerospace
- The Trent 1000 entered service with All Nippon Airways in 2010 as the powerplant for its Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The Trent 1000 is developed and produced in close partnership with Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
- In 2009, Rolls-Royce announced that Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Sumitomo Precision Products are participating in the development of the Trent XWB, which will power the Airbus A350 XWB.
Defence Aerospace
- Rolls-Royce engines power a wide range of aircraft in Japan's Self-Defense Forces including the Maritime Self-Defense Force P-3Cs, the Air Self-Defense Force C-130Hs, and the Ground Self-Defense Force OH-6Ds
- Rolls-Royce engines also power the Coast Guard and the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau
- Our engines are assembled and supported by Rolls-Royce' s partners – Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and IHI. Examples include the RTM322 engine which powers the Maritime Self-Defense Force's MCH-101/CH-101 helicopter, and the CTS800 engine installed on the US-2, which are assembled and maintained in Japan by KHI under a license agreement..
Marine
- With more than 200 Naval gas turbines in service, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force is one of the world' s largest operators of Rolls-Royce marine gas turbines. Spey, Olympus and Tyne engines predominate for propulsion and the AG9140 for on-board power generation.
Energy
- Rolls-Royce has a strong partnership with IHI, Kobe Steel and Hitachi Zosen to provide the Trent 60 and 501 gas turbine for power generation customers.
