Rolls-Royce has built on a tradition of business relations with German companies and government agencies that dates back over 90 years. Over that time, Rolls-Royce has steadily strengthened its links with Germany.
Today we have a workforce of more than 3,000 divided mainly between our two major sites in Dahlewitz near Berlin and Oberursel near Frankfurt am Main. Rolls-Royce Deutschland is Germany's only fully certified engine manufacturer with complete systems capability for the design, production and after-sales support of modern civil and military turbine engines.
More than 3,000 highly qualified staff are employed by Rolls-Royce directly at four sites across Germany and Rolls-Royce business activities directly and indirectly support a further 12,000 jobs in Germany. Our Rolls-Royce International Regional office is based in Berlin and Rolls-Royce Deutschland (RRD) has sites in the states of Brandenburg and Hesse.
We play a leading role in several successful European engine partnerships which include other German companies. We also use an extensive supply chain across Germany. We further committed to Germany with our joint ownership of the civil aero engine repair and overhaul company N3 Engine Overhaul Services, with Lufthansa Technik. The centre is based in Arnstadt, Thuringia and employs 400 people.
In 2011, Daimler AG and Rolls-Royce entered into a 50:50 joint venture to acquire the shares of Tognum AG of Friedrichshafen (Lake Constance), one of the world’s leading diesel engine manufacturers with a turnover of more than € 3.5 bn and more than 7,500 people worldwide (6,300 in Germany).
In 2010, the Mechanical Test Operation Centre (MTOC) was opened by Rolls-Royce close to the RRD Dahlewitz site in Brandenburg. This centre offers unequalled capabilities for the global Rolls-Royce businesses in testing and evaluating the mechanical and structural behaviour of gas turbine components.
We also have a strong research and development presence with four German universities (Cottbus, Dresden, Darmstadt, Karlsruhe) being part of Roll-Royce’s worldwide network of University Technology Centres (UTC).
