BitC Companies that Count: "Big Tick" award
Rolls-Royce is one of 15 companies recently awarded
a 'Big Tick' in this year's 'Shields Environmental Award
for Excellence'. As one of the Business in the Community
(BitC) Awards for Excellence in 2005, the accolade acknowledges
the achievements of companies achieving positive environmental
impact through their operations and activities.
Rolls-Royce is committed to reducing the environmental
impact of both its products and its manufacturing operations.
The company endorses the goals of the Advisory Council
for Aeronautical Research in Europe (ACARE) which aim
to meet the following targets by 2020:
- To reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by
50 per cent
- To reduce external noise by 50 per cent
- To reduce the emission of nitrous oxides by 80 per
cent
- To make substantial progress in reducing the environmental
impact of the manufacture, maintenance and disposal
of aircraft and related products.
Between 1998 and 2003, Rolls-Royce cut its annual energy
consumption by 25 per cent, reduced its greenhouse gas
emissions by 32 per cent, reduced the use of solvents
by 10 per cent per annum, reduced water consumption
by 33 per cent and increased the amount of waste sent
for recycling by 50 per cent. The company has now set
itself new challenging targets to make further improvements
in these areas by 2006.
