ILFC orders Rolls-Royce Trent XWB in $800M contract

Rolls-Royce today announced that International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) has confirmed an order for the Trent XWB engine to power a fleet of 20 firm Airbus A350 XWB aircraft, due for delivery starting April 2014.

The contract is valued at $800 million at engine list prices and makes ILFC the largest single customer for the Rolls-Royce Trent family. The Trent XWB is the fifth version to be ordered by ILFC, whose portfolio now includes 61 Trent-powered widebody aircraft, with a further 70 on order.

Steven F. Udvar-Hazy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ILFC, said: “The Trent XWB, specifically designed for the Airbus A350 XWB, offers our customers high levels of efficiency and low operating costs - an attractive combination for lessors.”

Sir John Rose, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce, added: "This is a significant order for the latest member of the Trent family from our biggest Trent customer. The Trent XWB will offer ILFC’s customers outstanding levels of performance for the A350 XWB whilst minimising its environmental impact.”

The 74,000 – 92,000lb thrust Trent XWB is the sixth member of the three-shaft Trent engine series and is being developed specifically for the Airbus A350 XWB twinjet. It is available for deliveries from mid-2013 and will be certificated at 92,000lb from entry into service.

The Trent XWB is the only powerplant currently available for the A350 XWB and will be the only engine fully optimised for the 250-375 seat aircraft family. It will utilise the latest available technology at entry into service to ensure lowest environmental impact.
Final engine configuration and selection of technologies are scheduled to be completed by mid-2008. The first Trent XWB will be ground tested in 2010. In 2011, the engine will make its maiden flight on a flying test bed, followed by airworthiness certification and first flight on the A350 XWB in 2012.
By the time the Trent XWB enters service, Trent series engines will have accumulated more than 75 million flying hours.
Rolls-Royce is continually improving the environmental impact of its products. Each year the company, in collaboration with its partners, invests around £700 million on research and development, two thirds of which has the objective of reducing the environmental impact of its products and operations. This technology investment is primarily aimed at reducing noise and emissions.
