Leadership programme
Investing in tomorrow
This programme is about finding and developing people who will become the future leaders of our business. if you’re passionate about getting the best out of the teams and the resources around you, this could be the path for you.
Once you’ve chosen your discipline – Engineering, HR, Health, Safety & Environment, Customer Management, Operations Management or Finance – you’ll experience a number of different parts of Rolls-Royce, challenging your ability to succeed in diverse environments. At the same time, you’ll gain a thorough understanding of our business, which will prepare you to take up a globally significant leadership role within around five years if you’re successful.
Every programme consists of two distinct parts. Part one typically lasts 18 months and is made up of a series of six-month placements, at least one of which will be overseas. Once you’ve proved yourself as a possible future leader, part two kicks in – consisting of two 18-24 month posts, giving you the opportunity to build on what you’ve learnt by taking on more responsibility and autonomy.
Although the assignments you work on will be live and your performance accountable and mission-critical, you’ll still have full support and back-up from the graduate programme to help you sharpen your strengths and progress your career.
The Leadership Development Programme is available in the UK, US, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Norway and Singapore. Find out more about the programmes below:
Engineering
Overview
Rolls-Royce has over 11,000 engineers around the world: some of them are multidisciplinary, some are specialists, and some are world experts in their field. Demonstrating outstanding technical knowledge, determination and the ability to work as part of a team, our engineers help find the answers to some of the world’s toughest challenges.
Leaders within Engineering are accountable for technical work, whether they’re managing groups of people or projects. This means that our Leadership graduates need to have a broad mix of technical skills and proven leadership ability.
Professional Excellence graduates initially focus on developing in-depth technical knowledge in a specific engineering discipline or a particular area of the business. From this foundation, some choose to grow into specialists, while others broaden their skill base or develop leadership experience. This leads to opportunities across a wide range of engineering roles.
Whichever programme you choose, you’ll be immersed in the business and exposed to the entire product lifecycle, designing integrated systems for optimum cost. As you develop, the challenges will increase in complexity and responsibility, combining on-the-job learning with training modules and project work. Ultimately, we’ll help you identify which areas you’re best suited to.

Operations Management
Overview
Operations Management is about the management of the total supply chain that delivers products and services to our customers.
As, typically, 70% of components for our products are made by other manufacturers and suppliers, the scope of Operations Management covers external manufacturers and suppliers as well as our own manufacturing, assembly and repair facilities, all of which exist around the globe.
Operations Management consists of the Manufacturing, Purchasing, Quality and Supply Chain Planning & Control and encompasses a wide range of activities from forecasting, production planning, supply chain design, managing and negotiating with suppliers to the management and development of manufacturing, assembly and repair processes and resources.
As success as a leader in Operations Management requires breadth and understanding across the whole supply chain, you can expect to do a variety of jobs during your career with Rolls-Royce where you will be encouraged to work across our sectors and regions throughout the world. In your early career, these jobs might include leading a manufacturing cell and its shop floor team, programme management of elements of a new factory build, leading a process improvement project, managing supplier relationships or being responsible for production planning and scheduling. The common theme in all of these is getting those early leadership experiences that will prepare you for the most senior Operations Management roles, be they in line management or functional leadership.
The core of the development programme is three six month attachments with Purchasing, Supply Chain Planning & Control and Manufacturing Engineering or Quality /Improvement to ensure that you develop the foundations skills and knowledge. One of these will be away from your home country. These are followed by a 12 month attachment in a leadership role, normally leading a manufacturing production team. On completion of these attachments, you will take on two substantive roles in different business sectors and geographies within Operations Management. The decision as to what these roles are will be based on your personal development plan, business needs and your own career preferences.
These on the job learning experiences are complemented by a range of formal training interventions, both class room and e-learning, in areas such as leadership, quality improvement and programme management. You will also be encouraged and supported in joining and studying with an appropriate professional institute.
A key element of your development will be mentoring from a senior manager and support from your personal Graduate Development Consultant.
What you'll need
Strong leadership skills and a good technical, science or numerate degree (2:1 or above in the UK, GPA 3.0 or above in the US) are a must.
Other candidates will need the national equivalent of these qualifications. Please refer to www.naric.org.uk You’ll also have a passion for all aspects of manufacturing and the motivation to work globally.
Where
Europe, Asia and the Americas. Those joining the programme will do so in Brazil, Norway, Singapore, the United Kingdom or the USA.
As the company has Operations Management leadership opportunities across the Americas, Asia and Europe, you will be required to spend time living and working overseas.
