Managing a team of engineers involves a range of activities, none more important than overseeing career development. This involves ensuring that, as much as possible, objectives, PDRs, promotional boardings, training and career experience meet both the needs of the individual and the business.
Working closely with team leaders and Work Package Owners (WPOs), Engineering Managers allocate resources to meet defined needs, outsourcing and sub-contracting when necessary. Moreover, whether it’s through developmental activities or audits or some other method, they continually look to improve the efficiency and capability of their team.
Engineering Managers also represent their team on relevant process councils, taking ownership of agreed improvement activities. They review and approve key technical deliverables and contribute as a technical specialist when appropriate (e.g. drawing alteration or source change approval). To drive the quality and integrity of all technical solutions, they also support the commodity gated review process.
