Human Resources Profile
Beth Hutchings
HR Graduate Programme
“The breadth of opportunity available to employees
at Rolls-Royce surprised me – it’s a complex, diverse
and dynamic organisation with something for everyone. If you’re
ambitious and keen to develop your career, there are always plenty
of opportunities across a number of functions to help you achieve
this.
The most enjoyable aspect of the programme is this opportunity
to gain solid experience in a number of different departments and
locations - in my first 18 months I worked in 4 departments in 3
different locations. This enabled me to work with a whole range
of people in the organisation, both in and outside the HR function,
and ultimately gave me the opportunity to build an invaluable professional
network.
The programme has also given me a solid grounding in the HR function
at Rolls-Royce. The experiences I’ve had have developed both
my technical and managerial skills and have provided a valuable
perspective on HR activity, which I can build on as I progress my
career.
My main responsibilities have been to design and deliver HR projects.
For example, a people processes handbook for defence aerospace managers
in Bristol, the global orientation process across South East Asia
and an employee handbook for Singapore. In each case, I was responsible
for leading the activity, designing the content and implementation
through getting buy-in from the relevant businesses and key stakeholders.
The most interesting of these projects was the Employee Handbook
in Singapore. My work included reviewing internal employee handbooks
in the UK and those of external organisations, developing an understanding
of Singapore employment legislation to ensure compliance and working
across businesses to bring an element of standardisation to in-country
employment practice. It was hard work at times, but it was a really
interesting and satisfying project.”
