Second Year English Literature, University of York
I applied for FUOTY as it looked like an interesting challenge with the potential of great rewards and experience – and that the award was sponsored by Rolls-Royce particularly sparked my interest. I felt I had some of the communication and logic skills which matched what they were looking for and I was excited to get involved in networking with such a prestigious company.
The assessment centre/tour was particularly exciting as it was a two-day event with overnight accommodation provided. It was my first assessment centre of this kind, but as soon as I arrived in Derby I felt welcomed and the other candidates were very easy to get on with. There were three areas of official assessment - interviews, presentations, and team work - but these took up only a few hours of our time at the HQ, as we spent a lot of time getting to know the company and the management team. Overall it was a very rewarding experience, definitely worthwhile! I now appreciate how diverse the company is, and the different career opportunities working for Rolls Royce would offer, both in the UK and internationally.
Even if I don't make it to the number one position, it's an amazing feeling to be in the top 10 out of roughly 700 applicants - that's nearly in the top 1%! The quality of the competition was astounding, with candidates coming from all over the world. The whole process has been really enlightening and I'm sure the experience will help me in years to come.
