Also, in your first week, you'll go on two Outward Bound days to help you integrate and get to know your colleagues. You'll enjoy another whole week of this during your second year on the apprenticeship.

What's on offer and what we look for?

Each year in the UK, we take on a huge number of apprentice's - 260 in 2012!  The apprenticeship you join us in will depend on your interest and current academic achievements and you can find out more information about each one within this section of the careers site.

As you might expect, we look for much more from you than just your academic achievements. Your interests are important too but we'll still need you to have:

  • Advanced/Modern Apprenticeships: Practical - GCSEs at Grade D or above
  • Advanced/Modern Apprenticeships: Technical/Specialist Science - GCSEs at Grade C or above
  • Higher Apprenticeships - Engineering: A-Levels or equivalent (BTEC) at Grade C or above, Maths,Physics/Chemistry and one other subject
  • Higher Apprenticeships - Non-engineering: A-Levels or equivalent (BTEC) at Grade C or above in any subject
  • Accounting Technician Programme - A strong academic background - with A or B grades at A-Level (or equivalent), in Maths, accounting, finance, or economics. A strong suite of GCSEs, including Maths and English, is also essential.

If you're joining us in a practical role, you'll obviously need to be good with your hands - someone who likes to really get involved. For those Technical apprentice's amongst you, your theoretical skills will serve you well. Whichever apprenticeship you choose, you'll need strong time-management skills, helping you to juggle real work with time to study.

Depending on your particular apprenticeship choice, you could be based at any one of our sites including our state-of-the-art Apprenticeship Academy in Derby, our sites include:

Annesley, Ansty, Barnoldswick, Bristol, Dunfermline, East Kilbride, Hucknall, Inchinnan, Newcastle, Sunderland, Vulcan (Dounreay), and Warrington.

Real support
We support you in the obvious ways - things like first-class tutoring and mentoring - and in the less obvious ones. Take for example our tailored Outward Bound training. For two days in your first week with us, and then for a whole week in your second year, you'll experience team building at its best. A real opportunity to bond with colleagues and build your network.

There's also our Driver Awareness training, designed to help you become a better driver, and our Financial Awareness training, which equips you with the skills to manage your money well and shows you how great the rewards with us can be if you're prepared to work hard.

We also have an Education Awareness training programme - plus a scheme that sees us giving something back to the communities we're a part of. It's your chance to get involved with anything from painting local community centres to creating gardens for the elderly.

Application process

Stage 1: Once you've decided which Apprenticeship is for you, you'll need to find an appropriate vacancy and apply online.

Stage 2: If you are applying to a role in the UK and your application is eligible you will immediately receive two emails, one to acknowledge you have submitted your application, and the second email inviting you to take two online psychometric tests. You'll then have up to ten days to complete them - but before you do, try out some sample questions by visiting www.shldirect.com. We have also compiled a number of frequently asked questions  to support you.

Please note, not all emails are compatible with our systems so please check your spam/junk folders to ensure you have received both emails.

Stage 3: If your application is successful, you'll be invited to our Assessment Centre. The day consists of psychometric tests, interviews and a group exercise:

  • Manual Dexterity Test - a test designed to measure your hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills (may need checking with the instructions). Please note that this part of the process is not applicable for Higher Apprenticeships, Accounting Technician Programme or our A-Level Manufacturing Development Programme.
  • Psychometric Test - as the tests you completed on-line were unsupervised you will be asked to re-sit one of them when you come in to see us. You may wish to re-visit the on-line practice questions at www.shldirect.com
  • Group Exercise - we will ask you to participate in a group activity that will allow us to observe how you work with others in a team environment.
  • Motivational Interview - we would like to know a bit more about your practical achievements. Think about a time you've made, designed or planned something and be prepared to talk us through what you did and what new skills you learnt.
  • Technical Interview - we would like to gain an understanding of how well you are able to learn and understand information that relates to our business. We are also interested in your understanding of Rolls-Royce and the different sectors in which we operate.
  • Competency Interview - you will be asked to give examples of times you've demonstrated some of the competencies that are important to us.

Stage 4: If you're successful at the Assessment Centre, you will be contacted within 1 week and told the good news.
