Accounting Technician Launch a career in finance

Our Accounting Technician Programme (ATP) is your chance to launch a career in finance as part of our successful global business - and it's got the perfect mix of on-the-job experience and classroom-based learning. At the end of your first 18 months, you'll not only be up to speed with finance - you'll also have valuable professional qualifications under your belt.

During the programme, you'll experience three six-month placements. Each will give you an insight into a different business area, so you'll build a broad understanding of our company as a whole. The placements could be based in any of our UK sites, but your final role will be in our European Finance Service Centre (EFSC) in Derby.

All our apprentices are paid competitive salaries, which vary according to role and location. Accounting Technicians start at around £12,000-£13,000 per year, which will increase significantly once you've finished the programme.

Get qualified 
Just as important as your day-to-day work will be the time you spend on day-release working towards your AAT exams. The AAT has three stages of exams: Foundation, Intermediate and Technical. We'll pay all your fees, and once you earn your AAT qualification we'll support your further study for a CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) certification.

Our Apprenticeships involve a fair amount of academic work. For that reason, we'll need you to have already achieved a certain level in your education:

  • A-Level - Grade A or B in Maths, Accounting, Finance or Economics.
  • GCSE - Grades A-C in Maths, English and a strong set of other subjects.

You'll also need some work experience, and a good idea of the importance of finance in business. We'd also like to know about your interests or hobbies - and any achievements (like sports participation or volunteer work) that show you can balance work and life effectively.

Stage 1: Once you've decided which programme is for you, you'll need to find an appropriate vacancy and apply online.

Stage 2: If you are applying to a role in the UK and your application is eligible you will immediately receive two emails, one to acknowledge you have submitted your application, and the second email inviting you to take two online psychometric tests. You'll then have up to ten days to complete them - but before you do, try out some sample questions by visiting www.shldirect.com. We have also compiled a number of frequently asked questions  to support you.

Stage 3: If your application is successful, you'll be invited to our Assessment Centre. The day consists of psychometric tests, interviews and a group exercise:

  • Psychometric Test - as the tests you completed on-line were unsupervised you will be asked to re-sit one of them when you come in to see us. You may wish to re-visit the on-line practice questions at www.shldirect.com
  • Group Exercise - we will ask you to participate in a group activity that will allow us to observe how you work with others in a team environment.
  • Motivational Interview - we would like to know a bit more about your practical achievements. Think about a time you've made, designed or planned something and be prepared to talk us through what you did and what new skills you learnt.
  • Technical Interview - we would like to gain an understanding of how well you are able to learn and understand information that relates to our business. We are also interested in your understanding of Rolls-Royce and the different sectors in which we operate.
  • Competency Interview - you will be asked to give examples of times you've demonstrated some of the competencies that are important to us.

Stage 4: If you're successful at the Assessment Centre, you will be contacted within 1 week and told the good news.
