We have a fantastic opportunity for a talented Design Engineer to join the Next Generation Nuclear Propulsion Plant Control Rod Drive Mechanism (NGNPP CRDM) commodity team. As a Design Engineer within Submarines Primary Components you will specify design requirements to ensure the customer's objectives are met. Working with interfacing functions and teams, including Primary Components CAD, you will develop concept design solutions and cost-effective assembly and component definitions ready for manufacture. You will apply techniques such as design for manufacture, design for assembly, concurrent engineering and rapid prototyping. You will produce calculations and specify/accept analyses needed to substantiate the design in support of the safety justification.

For the past fifty years, we have been the Technical Authority for the Nuclear Steam Raising Plant (NSRP), providing advanced nuclear propulsion systems for the UK Royal Navy nuclear submarine fleet.
 
Design and development of the Next Generation Nuclear Propulsion Plant (NGNPP) provides exciting new opportunities for talented design/mechanical engineers to join our team. These roles exist specifically in the Rolls-Royce Submarines business, based in Derby UK. Successful applicants will report to a designated project team leader, and will design high integrity/reliable components for NGNPP Control Rod Drive Mechanisms (CRDMs).
 
The NGNPP CRDM programme is entering an important phase of verification and validation, with qualification tests planned in the UK and overseas over the next few years. Test programme success will unlock the release to manufacture of the first boat set of CRDMs for power module build later in the decade.
 
This specific role offers an opportunity to support the testing programme by providing performance predictions, assessing and interpreting test results, providing validation statements to support the design/safety case and making recommendations to the product design engineers for further improvements.
 
Key roles and responsibilities include:
  • Formulating design requirements, in consultation with the key project stakeholders and internal/external customers.
  • Applying structured processes to generate and select concept design solutions.
  • Producing design verification, including engineering calculations, design and substantiation reports.
  • Checking and approval of component and assembly definitions, ready for manufacture.
  • Defining component/system test requirements.
  • Analysing test results to prove the performance of the design.
  • Supporting manufacture of the product, including waivers and concession processes.
