Engineering Apprentice

On why he is well suited to an engineering apprenticeship

“Engineering is a subject that has always come naturally to me. I’ve always liked making things, taking things apart to see how they work and watching as my dad built or maintained cars.

“Once I got a car of my own I spent as much time as I could outside modifying or repairing it, and learning all about how different parts work.”

On what’s so exciting about being an apprentice at Rolls-Royce

“At Rolls-Royce, you have the chance to work with some of the most advanced technology around, and some of the most powerful and exciting engines being produced – many of which I have already seen or worked with this year.”

On the team spirit at Rolls-Royce

“Most people in Rolls-Royce have been through the same apprenticeship and training that I have, so there is a real team environment in the workplace.

“Teamwork seems to be instinctive at Rolls-Royce and that’s evident in the way work is carried out on a day-to-day basis, from anything like stripping an engine down – which is done by a team of people, each working on different parts of the engine – to solving complex problems.”

On the best thing about being a Rolls-Royce Apprentice

“The best thing about the apprenticeship is that it’s giving me a chance to study for qualifications specific to my future career.

“I’m being sent to one of the best colleges for engineering, in one of the nicest areas of the country – and working with people every bit as enthusiastic as me.”

On how an apprenticeship compares with going to university

“Unlike going to university, with my apprenticeship I’m getting paid, and I already have a job for me lined up at the other end of my studies. I have job security, money that I’ve earned and an opportunity to take as much free education as I am willing to put in the effort to do.

“I already have a good idea of where I’ll be in a few years time, so now, I can relax and enjoy myself without worrying about the future.”
