SAMULET programme

SAMULET I

SAMULET (Strategic Affordable Manufacturing in the UK through Leading Environmental Technologies) is a Rolls-Royce-led collaborative programme to accelerate the development of manufacturing and product technologies. It focuses on productivity and environmental improvements, including efficient advanced manufacturing processes and lower engine fuel consumption. Research focuses on improved turbomachinery, combustion and transmission systems and a broad range of existing and novel manufacturing processes.

The programme is closely linked to the UK advanced manufacturing research centres in Sheffield, Inchinnan and Ansty and number of the UK University Technology Centres.  Other industrial collaborators include BAE Systems, GKN and three SMEs (Granta Design, BERU F1 and Tacit Connexions).

It is valued at up to £90 million over four years from 2009 and is receiving support of £28.5 million from the TSB and £11.5 million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, with further support from several regional bodies.

SAMULET II

In June 2012  Business Secretary Vince Cable announced a new £65 million venture (SAMULET II) to keep the UK at the forefront of advances in aerospace and advanced manufacturing.

The Government is investing £25 million, with business, led by Rolls-Royce, providing a further £40 million, for a series of collaborative research and technology projects.

SAMULET II will be delivered through the Technology Strategy Board and see Rolls-Royce working with other companies and universities in the High Value Manufacturing Catapult.

Rolls-Royce consistently invests significant amounts of money and resource in order to improve both our products and our manufacturing capability. The vast majority of this investment also continues to improve our environmental performance. SAMULET II will build on the positive work undertaken in SAMULET I by Rolls-Royce along with our industrial and academic partners.
