EFE programme (Environmentally Friendly Engine)
The Environmentally Friendly Engine (EFE) programme will establish and operate a critical validation platform for breakthrough technologies to support technology developments in high temperature materials, high efficiency turbines, low emission combustions, advanced manufacturing technologies, engine controls and nacelle aerodynamics.
The EFE programme fundamentally targets three areas of environmental concern: reducing CO2, NOx and noise from aircraft; and is an essential fundamental stepping stone towards the 2020 ACARE environmental goals. Deliverables include validation of technologies to support high turbine entry temperatures, improved turbine efficiency and low emissions lean burn combustion. The EFE programme started in 2006 and is expected to complete in 2013.
The EFE consortium includes industrial participants Aero Engine Controls, Bombardier, HS-Marston, Rolls-Royce, Unison and six leading UK universities.
Support for EFE has been provided by Technology Strategy Board, Advantage West Midlands, East Midlands Development Agency, Invest Northern Ireland, Northwest Regional Development Agency, South West Regional Development Agency.
