Materials technology
The provision of advanced materials technologies has paced the development of the gas turbine engine throughout its history. However, over this period the emphasis has changed from being dominated initially by the drive to improve engine performance to one in which cost and environmental factors also play major roles.
The last decade has seen the launch of many new engine projects to support the rapid growth of the Rolls-Royce business, each of which has provided an ideal opportunity to introduce new materials technology into our products. The following pages describe a selection of these in greater detail:
