Frequently asked questions

Here are some frequently asked questions that might be helpful for you:

When should I apply for a work experience placement?

As soon as you are given official work experience placement dates from your school, the sooner the better.

Why do you not generally offer work experience placements outside term-time?

If a placement takes place out of term-time, the schools are liable for the welfare of the student and we have been strongly advised from local Council against supporting placements that take place outside the academic term-time.  Many students are visited by their teacher / work experience co-ordinator during their placement, this would be more difficult to organise should the placement take place outside term time. In addition half-term / term breaks are often popular holiday times for employees and hence resource levels within department areas can be lower than normal.

What can I expect the dress code to be?

As part of the confirmation process a placement information document (unique to the business area) will be sent to all parties concerned and this will detail dress code requirements.

I haven’t completed my qualifications yet, should I leave this section blank on my application form?

No.  As much detail as possible is required on the application form.  Please detail Teacher Assessment results if you are currently taking your GCSEs but detail your expected GCSE Grades.  Likewise with A Levels.  Detailing the subjects you are undertaking at school and your expected grades assists us in making a appropriate decision regarding work experience placements.

What particular qualities do I need?

Do I need to prepare?

Yes.  The Rolls-Royce website has volumes of useful and informative information.  Maybe come prepared with questions you want answering?

For GCSE students – if provided, you should also bring your work experience workbook with you for completion during your work experience placement.

If I am unsuccessful can I apply again next year?

If your work experience placement requests fits our criteria for applications than we would be happy to re-consider.
